Makonde
figurine
The
Makonde ethnic groups live in Tanzania and Mozambique, in small individual
settlements. There is no general ruler of all the peoples; each village
recognizes a chief who has inherited his position matrilineally, based
on his family's position of power within the community. The Makonde
have retained their traditional religion, which is the remembrance
and celebration of the ancestors, despite centuries of influence by
Islamic traders. They are known as master wood carvers throughout
East Africa.
